As near as I can tell, the lower-case “i” as a prefix began as a trend sometime around the late 90s with the introduction of Apple’s “iMac”. While early accounts indicate that the “i” was meant to connote “Internet” (as such was still somewhat novel and exploding in popularity at the time), today the prefix seems to relate more to connectivity and immediacy of information in our daily social, personal, and professional lives. I am a proud member of Syracuse University’s iSchool (also known as School of Information Studies) who investigates phenomenon which are inextricably bound by computer-mediated environments that facilitate (and yes, even encourage) this sense of connectivity and immediacy. Therefore, it seems only fitting to name my own webspace with a nod to the lower-case “i” prefix.
I hope to use this blog space on occasion as a forum for casually sharing thoughts on my own academic research interests and tangential philosophical musings. In the meantime, welcome to iMike! There is much more to come as this site begins to take shape and form!
